Winner of the 2009 Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble, New York’s Vanguard Jazz Orchestra began life as the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra in 1966 and has performed continuously ever since. Throughout, it has included a group of all-star musicians renowned for their originality and virtuosic skills. For the past 45 years, the orchestra has been playing every Monday night at The Village Vanguard, described by All About Jazz as “THE premier jazz club in history.”
The band has garnered nine Grammy nominations and two awards since 1995. It records with Planet Arts, its own artist-driven record company, and has been an entity of Sixteen as One Music Inc., a not-for-profit corporation which is run as a cooperative, with trombonist John Mosca as Director.
